American Journal of Applied Mathematics and Statistics

In this paper, under the background of overall food security situation in the SAARC countries, attempts have been made to analyse the production behaviour along with the total seeds of two major food crops rice and wheat. This will help to draw up strategies and programmes for regional cooperation in ensuring food security and reducing hunger and malnutrition in the region. Forecasting of area, production, yield and total seed production will not only help to solve the food security problem but also seed security in these SAARC countries in future. In addition to descriptive statistics, the Box – Jenkins ARIMA modelling technique has been used to analyse the information from 1961 through 2010. The forecast shows that rice and wheat production for the year 2020 would be about 794 and 777 million tons respectively in the world. In-spite of increase in production the study reveals that the yield of rice and wheat in world would be 4.35 t/ha and 3.4 t/ ha in 2020 but the yield of these two crops in SAARC countries, barring one country in each, will remain far below the world projection. Thus, under the given remote possibility of horizontal expansion, the study emphasises the need for quantum jump in the per hectare yield of these two crops for this region. The study also advocates that good quality of seeds in good amount be made available to the farmers, otherwise the whole food security of this part of the Globe would be under tremendous risk.

Some Fixed Point Theorems of Semi Compatible and Occasionally Weakly Compatible Mappings in Menger Space

The notion of semi compatible mappings was introduced by Cho. Sharma and Sahu (Semicompatibility and fixed points, Math. Japon, 42(1), 1995, 91-98) and the notion of occationally weakly compatible mappings was introduced by Al-Thagafi M. A., Shahzad N. (Generalized I-non expansive selfmaps and invariant approximations, Acta. Math. Sinica (English series) 24(5), 2008, 867-876). In this paper, we prove a common fixed point theorem in Menger space using the concept of semi compatible and occasionally weakly compatible mappings. Some results are also given as corollaries. Our results generalise some similar results in the literature.

Application of Linear ODE as Auxiliary Equation to the Nonlinear Evolution Equation

In this article, simplified Modified Camassa-Holm (SMCH) equation is investigated to construct some new analytical solutions via the improved (G’/G)-expansion method. Second order linear ordinary differential equation is used with constant coefficients in the method. As a result, some new travelling wave solutions are obtained through the hyperbolic function, the trigonometric function and the rational forms. If parameters take specific values, the solitary waves are derives from the travelling waves. Furthermore, some of the solutions are presented in the figures with the aid of commercial software Maple.

A Study about Solving the Nonlinear Spherical Seepage Model of Three-Area Composite Reservoir

This paper studies the nonlinear spherical seepage model of three-area composite reservoir under three kinds of outer boundary conditions (infinite boundary, constant pressure boundary and closed boundary) which not considering well-bore storage and skin factor. On the basis of similar structure of solution for differential equation’s boundary value problem, this paper obtains the solution of the nonlinear spherical seepage model of three-area composite reservoir. The study not only benefits to understand the inherent laws of the solution, but also provides the convenience to compile corresponding test software.

A Perspective on Women Gender Equality in Nigeria: Level, Differentials and Prediction

The major aim of this paper is to ascertain the level, differential, and prediction of gender equality in Nigeria by 2015. Knowledge accumulation and application, especially for women, have become major factors in economic development and are increasingly at the core of a country’s competitive advantage in the global economy. Secondary data from Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), Nigeria Demographic and Education Survey (NDES), Sentinel survey and National Population Commission (NPC) data were used. The result showed that over 71 percent of women had no education while 43 percent of men had no education. Furthermore, there is disparity between women and men education according to household economic status as in the poorest households, 40 percent of men are literate compared to 13 percent of women. Also, the population projection from 2009 to 2015 with 2008 as the base year was carried out. The result showed that Nigerian’s population by sex is growing exponentially at the rate of 3.04%. This increase will further hamper the realization of the third millennium development goal which is gender equality by 2015.

On Selection of Best Sensitive Logistic Estimator in the Presence of Collinearity

Collinearity is a major problem in regression modeling. It affects the prediction ability of ordinary least square estimators. Collinearity is established in logistic regression models when the difference between the least and highest eigen value of the information matrix is more in relation to the least eigen value. This results in inflated variance of estimated regression parameters. Consequently, the resulting model is not reliable and will result in incorrect conclusions about the relationship among the variables. To overcome the problem of collinearity in logistic regression model a number of estimators were proposed. This article compares the performance of four estimators - ordinary logistic estimator, logistic ridge estimator, generalized logistic ridge estimator and modified logistic ridge estimator in the presence of collinearity, to ascertain which is more effective in variance reduction. To establish superiority among the above estimators, analysis is carried out on a case study in University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar Cross River State, Nigeria. Result showed that modified logistic estimator performed better than other estimator considered due to the fact that it had the smallest variance.

Application of the Triangular Fuzzy Model to Assessment of Analogical Reasoning Skills

We apply the Triangular Fuzzy Assessment Model (TFAM) for analogical reasoning skills assessment. The TFAM is a new original model based on the Centre of Gravity (COG) defuzzification technique, which we have properly adapted and used in earlier papers as an assessment method of several human activities. The main idea of the TFAM is the replacement of the rectangles appearing in the graph of the COG technique by isosceles triangles sharing common parts. In this way, we can treat better the ambiguous cases of scores being at the boundaries between two successive linguistic characterizations (grades) of the level of the individuals’ performance. An application is also presented illustrating our results in practice, where the TFAM is compared with two traditional assessment methods (calculation of the means and of the GPA index) based on principles of the bivalent logic (yes-no).
